Middleton, situated about seven miles from the city of Manchester, is the second largest settlement in the borough of Rochdale and has about 25 per cent of its total population. Some of Middleton's most famous sons include Edgar Wood, the innovative architect; Sam Bamford, the 19th century radical writer, Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes, and comic actor Steve Coogan. Middleton's Parish Church of St Leonard has some of the oldest origins in the region and still boasts a timber spire. The church is also home to what is believed to be England's first war memorial window, commemorating the Battle of Flodden and the victory of the Middleton Archers in the year 1513.
